Umiam Lake, popularly known as Barapani (Big Water), is a massive, mesmerising artificial reservoir located in the Ri-Bhoi district of Meghalaya. Spanning over 10 square kilometres, it was created in the early 1960s by damming the Umiam River for Northeast India’s first major hydroelectric project. Today, it serves as the ultimate, scenic gateway for travellers driving along the Guwahati-Shillong highway
