Thattekad, primarily famous for the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary (officially known as the Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary), is an evergreen low-land forest located on the northern banks of the Periyar River in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, India. Described by the legendary ornithologist Dr. Salim Ali as the “richest bird habitat in peninsular India,” this 25.16-square-kilometre sanctuary is home to more than 300 species of resident and migratory birds.
